Spencer nods in agreement, smiling slightly at the sight of the bare tree before them as he tilts his head to rest on Joel's shoulder. They hadn't been in much shape to go get the tree themselves, but they'd gone up into the attic to search for the boxes of decorations Spencer had known his mother kept stored away. The boxes have collected dust for the past couple years, but they're set out at their feet now, and Spencer just needs a moment to collect himself before he can really do this.

It isn't that having a tree in this house again is bringing back too many painful memories; quite the opposite, in fact, it only reminds Spencer of how exceedingly fortunate he is to be standing here with his husband, with the only person in this world who could have ever given him a family again because there's nobody else Spencer could ever want to be with, could ever love this much. Right here, in their living room with Joel's arm around him, this is the only place Spencer wants to be right now. Everything else has merely faded away, as it so often does when he's alone with his husband.

"How many fruit baskets do we owe Coop now? Three, four? I knew there was a reason I took so long to develop more friendships, it turns out they're very expensive." He lifts his head to press a kiss against Joel's cheek before leaning down to pluck at the folds of one of the boxes. "I'd like you to bear in mind, by the way, that tree decorating in this house has always consisted of my mother fixing all the ornaments my brother and I would put up to her liking until we finally just gave up helping altogether and ended up eating all the cookies she'd bake in the kitchen." He pulls out one of the sillier ornaments from the top of a box with a snort, shaking his head as he reaches out to hang it on the tree. "Of course, if I'd known then that I'd be doing this with you now, I might have put a bit more effort into learning how to do a better job of it."
