doublethepain: (this idiot smiling to himself ugh)

"Give yourself some credit," Spencer teases, sliding a hand up Joel's shirt so he can gently brush his fingers down his husband's spine. Joel's body is warm, as it always is, and Spencer is loathe to step away from him but there's little choice if they really want to get this tree decorated. He does, he realizes, he wants to see it finished because as silly as it may sound to anyone else, this tree means something to him. He'll hold onto this memory for as long as he can, their first attempt at decorating together that will lead so nicely into their first Christmas, their first New Year, and Spencer smiles to himself because Joel has given him so many firsts since they'd met.

"You'd probably win more doing that than I would standing like a deer caught in headlights and forgetting how to speak entirely." He rolls his eyes, though he's still smiling in spite of how much truth there are to his words. "I was always a mess when I had to speak in front of crowds in school. It didn't matter if it was on stage in the auditorium or at the front of the classroom, I would just freeze. It's a good thing I never aspired to be a motivational speaker."

Spencer knows that a majority of his teachers in school would look at him now and only see wasted potential. He'd been something of a nuisance to some of them, at least that's how he'd felt, because he'd been able to learn all the material quickly and would get considerably bored during the regular lesson plan. Still, even with high marks and graduating at the top of his class, Spencer had chosen not to go to college. He doesn't regret that, he'd been happy working at the library all this time and if he thinks about it now, he might never have met Joel otherwise. There are so many different paths he could have taken in this life, so many Joel could have taken, but they've ended up here. They've ended up at home, not because of the roof over their heads but because they've found each other.

He reaches down to choose a few ornaments of his own to hook onto the tree, more and more eager by the minute to finish up so they can sit down on the couch next to the fire and amire their handiwork. Christmas is going to be busy, the house full of family, and he can't deny that the thought of just settling down beside each other tonight is going to be exactly what they need before the countdown to Christmas truly begins. "I can't believe the year is almost over," he says, shaking his head in a bit of awe. "But at the same time, I can't believe it's barely been a year since we've been together. I'm not sure how well that bodes for us while we're waiting for the baby to arrive."
