There's something about the way Lou says it, that she's fine just looking, that makes Spencer worry he's made her uncomfortable in some way. It hadn't been his intention, of course, he's just already been bombarded with texts from friends expressing unbridled desire to visit and hold and coo. Some people simply aren't as infatuated by infants as others, which Spencer can understand because he's never felt much need to poke and prod at anyone else's babies but his own. With Dane, he's already found that he can't stop counting fingers and toes over and over again, as if anything might change from one count to the next.

Being a father has turned out to be so much different than simply expecting to be a father, and Spencer supposes this is mind assumes the reactions he has to his own son will be true of everyone who comes to meet him. If Lou doesn't want to hold the baby, of course it isn't a problem, and he doesn't bother saying it because she doesn't need his approval one way or another. He just smiles, nodding in agreement with what Joel says about how beautiful Dane is.

"No bias," he says with a crooked smile, "he is beautiful, there's no denying it. And anyone who tries to say differently will be in for a very nasty surprise."
