For the first time since they left for the cruise, things feel like they're back to normal, though perhaps normal isn't exactly the right word for it either. At one time, normal would have been spending his days quietly minding the store, his nights alone in his apartment with only Balto and a book to keep him company, but that's certainly not his normal anymore. Since they've gotten home, Joel has bought a new suit, one for him to wear when he and Spencer get married. And they've bought rings, too, rings that are sitting in a box upstairs in their bedroom, Joel's a blackened silver he sometimes takes out just to look at. One day soon Spencer is going to put it on him and he's going to wear it for the rest of his life.
They haven't settled on a date or made any firm plans, but he'd picked up their marriage license today and it's only good for ninety days, which means sometime between now and November 23, they're going to get married. It's a date that seems both incredibly far away and yet awfully near at the same time and as he sets the license down on the kitchen table, he can't help but smile. He'd had to close the store early to pick it up before City Hall closed, but he doesn't feel quite so guilty over that as he once might have.
With Spencer's help and with his support, the store has actually been doing fairly well over the past several weeks. Joel is cautiously optimistic that he'll be able to purchase the property within the month despite his little splurge on the rings and the suit. He's always made enough to keep himself going, but for the first time it seems like the store might actually be making a fairly good profit and Joel knows that's all due to Spencer.
A lot of changes in his life have been due to Spencer, though, and he knows he's never been quite this happy.
When the front door opens, he realizes he's still staring down at the marriage license with a faint smile curving his lips and he glances up, feeling rather silly. He expects Raleigh to be at her new bakery location for a few hours yet, so he knows Spencer is going to be the one walking through the door, but his cheeks flush anyway, feeling like he's been caught doing something ridiculous, but he can't really help himself.
