Joel hasn't looked at the first letter since the night he received it. After Spencer had left, he'd read it over several times for no real reason, because the three words written on the plain piece of white paper in block letter hadn't been difficult to memorize. I HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN. He wants to believe it's a joke, a prank being played on him by someone in town who doesn't like him very much. That's not impossible, given how few friends he really has, but he knows it's not the case.

He knows where that letter has come from.

It's folded up and locked in a drawer beneath the register in his store. He doesn't know why he's bothered to keep it, but it's still there and he's still doing his best to ignore it. It's been a little difficult, especially with the premonition he had at the ball and everything he's been trying to deal with. Things with Spencer are still unclear, but at least there's been some progress, so he knows he should be pleased, and he is. But at the same time, he can't help but think about how he hasn't yet spoken with Lara. That Lou knows he's a witch. It's all complicated and he doesn't know what to do.

By the time he closes the store, he's tired. He just wants to go upstairs and sleep, but when he opens his apartment door, he can immediately tell something is wrong. There's a breeze blowing it from a window he knows he didn't leave open and he crosses to it, sticking his head out. It's the window with the fire escape under it and Joel immediately turns around, looking for an intruder.

There's no one, but something has been left behind. Going to his kitchen table, Joel picks up the note, handling it carefully by the corners, then unfolds it.

INTO LIBRARIANS NOW. OR LITTLE BLONDE GIRLS. THEY SHOULD KNOW TO BE CAREFUL AROUND YOU. SOMEONE MIGHT GET HURT.

It reads like a threat. It might not be, it might only be a reference to what happened in Shediac, but it reads like a threat and so Joel puts both notes into plastic bags, then locks the the store door and walks briskly to the police station. He's not sure what to do when he arrives and he looks around awkwardly, waiting for someone to notice him.
