(spencer - cruise)
Aug. 1st, 2014 09:07 pmIt's really not so bad now that he's had some time to get used to it.
Of course, given the choice, Joel knows he'd still prefer to be back in Siren Cove, both his feet on solid ground, but the fact that several days have gone by and he's still only had one more very quiet panic attack is enough that he'll consider the trip a success. It had helped, too, that he'd woken up, his heart pounding, his chest tight, and all he'd had to do was grope in the dark for Spencer's hand. It was like he'd known instantly, had shuffled closer to Joel in the bed and pulled Joel's head down to rest against his chest. Lying there, listening to the steady thump of Spencer's heart, calming down had been so easy. Almost as soon as it had arrived, the panic seemed to dissipate and he'd fallen asleep like that, still listening to the beating of Spencer's heart.
He knows there's another event tonight, something he imagines most of the guests at the cruise will attend, but he knows he's not interested in speed dating. Even if he hadn't been happier with Spencer than he's ever been in his life, even if he'd been single, Joel knows he wouldn't have been able to attend. He hopes it works out for others -- he knows Raleigh is going -- but he imagines such an event wouldn't work well for someone like him, someone barely willing to talk to unfamiliar faces most of the time.
Instead of going, he and Spencer are wandering the ship hand in hand. Joel thinks he might want to drag Spencer into one of the hot tubs tonight while everyone else is distracted, but for now they're just walking and when they pass the boutique, a flash of light off the gold of a ring catches Joel's eye. He looks over and the rings... well, they're not to his tastes, anyway, and he has to bite back a laugh.
"We should try on rings we'll likely never buy," he says, impulsively tugging Spencer toward the door of the boutique. The idea of getting married has been on his mind since he'd told Spencer he wants to. It's the one thing he can't stop thinking about and he has no intention of planning some big event, but he still likes the idea of finding Spencer the perfect ring.
They can start here. With all the things they absolutely don't want.
